Why Perimenopause Makes Organzing So Hard

It’s 2:30 in the morning, and the house is quiet, but you’re wide awake and staring at the ceiling. Your brain won’t stop spinning (even though it gets plenty foggy during the daylight hours!!) and you keep thinking about all the things you feel behind on…so you search something like ‘why can’t I keep my house together anymore’ into ChatGPT and the scrolling begins…

There are several factors that make midlife feel especially overwhelming, and perimenopause or menopause can definitely contribute. So keep reading if you’ve been frustrated by your home lately and want some ideas for how to handle it.

Why Everything Feels Harder Right Now (It’s Not Just in Your Head)

As we age, hormones shift and impact our sleep patterns, focus, energy, and other areas. Super fun, right?

The disjointed thoughts and brain fog of perimenopause and menopause have a lot in common with ADHD because both impact executive functioning - your ability to organize thoughts, plan, and juggle multiple tasks.

If you’re wondering why tasks that used to feel simple now take so much more mental energy, Let’s Talk Menopause has a great breakdown of what’s going on with focus and follow-through during this stage of life.

(Quick note: I’m an organizer, not a doctor! If you’re wondering about this yourself, contact your doctor or gynecologist to discuss further.)

Chaos Isn't a Character Flaw

Before we dive in further, I want to catch you in case you’ve been shoulding on yourself lately. If you keep thinking to yourself, “I should be able to keep up with this,” or something similar, then I’m talking to you!

We’re often much harder on ourselves than we are on others, and I want to remind you to give yourself grace. Your house isn’t a mess because you’re failing at life.

Life changes, perimenopause or not, and sometimes it’s hard to keep all the balls in the air.

You’ll never get any shame or judgment from me, so try to cut back on how much you’re dishing out to yourself!

Small Shifts That Actually Help (Low-Energy-Day Friendly)

Okay…so now I’ll step off my soapbox for a minute and give you a few tangible, low-effort tips to help you manage the overwhelm and stress.

These are geared toward sleep-disrupted, low-energy days. Think "reduce decisions," not "add systems."

  • Focus on High Traffic Areas

    • This isn’t the time to haul out your seventeen boxes of nostalgic items from the attic or basement. Instead, focus on things that will make daily life easier. Places like your entryway or launchpad, kitchen, laundry room, etc.

  • Declutter Common Areas

    • Declutter the spaces you use most to reduce decision fatigue and frustration. Fewer items to keep track of lightens our mental load!

  • Decision-Free Storage

    • Eliminate decisions and create dedicated spaces for common household mess spots, like a tray for mail, a basket for shoes, or hooks for jackets. Whatever makes it SIMPLE.

  • Letting Go of Pinterest-perfect

    • The beautiful images you see on Instagram and Pinterest usually aren’t a true reflection of real life. Give yourself a break and aim for functional and ‘good enough’!

Why This Is Exactly When an Organizer Can Help

Trying to keep your house in order (with or without perimenopause!) can feel like a full-time job. And if you don't have the energy to figure it out all on your own, there's real relief in someone else calling the shots for a while.

An outside, neutral person can see the house (and the next step) without the emotional weight you're carrying. I’d love to help you feel the relief that comes with getting some of your daily spaces in order. And we often can get a lot done in just one or two sessions!

You started this search at 2:30 a.m., wide awake and overwhelmed. Now it's time to sort it all out in the daylight hours — so you can reduce the stress and finally get some sleep that isn't interrupted by a mental to-do list. So if you’re ready for judgment-free support, let me make it easy for you. I work with women in [city/region] who are navigating this kind of overwhelm. Contact me to hear how easy it is to get started.

Until next time, remember...

Your home doesn't have to be perfect to be peaceful.

Take one small step today, give yourself lots of grace, and know that every little bit of progress matters.

Cheering you on,

Hope 🌻
